I could have written this. Ended my Mother’s Day with a 10pm zoom call, and just sort felt defeated about it. Just want one day a year where I get to do what I want. Spend the other 364 catering to literally everyone else’s needs.
Sorry you felt this way. I used to relate to this well when I was in BigLaw.
Not work related- but similar feelings of lack of support had been creeping in these past few weeks. Mother’s Day in our family (mine and husband’s) has historically been about our mothers (now “Grandma”) and I REFUSED to make it about them this year. Sorry, I’m a young mother in the trenches with a toddler and pregnant with my second, with a full-time, demanding job. I told my husband that he needed to devote the weekend to supporting me so that I could get a slice of relaxation, instead of us running around to do dinner and brunch with (retired) Grandmas. He agreed and we declined all invites to everything and it was amazing.
I can relate and it doesn’t help that my son’s a mean ungrateful teenager! 🥲
I had a wonderful Mother’s Day, but it was a knock in the teeth to see my 6 year old write on his gift to me “mommy is good at work” “mommy’s favorite thing is writing emails” “mommy’s best dinner is take out.” I am having a really rough day today and wish I could throw away the golden handcuffs.
