My 5 y/o is bright and just started piano this summer. That teacher was too laid back, so we started a new one this fall; she is fun and good with her age but she’s a very serious musician who composes, etc. We work out of 3 piano books and my child gets frustrated/overwhelmed with the curriculum. Should I request the teacher to dial it back? Or keep it up so my child learns resilience and is challenged (there’s no issue with school work)? Appreciate any thoughts. :)

Dial it back…she’s 5!

110% thanks for being a confirmation!

Dial it back. My parents lovingly required that I played the piano, and had good intentions, but I HATED the piano and spent many piano lessons in tears because I wanted to quit and wasn't allowed to. Forcing something your kid does't like will build resentment, not resilience. Resilience is built by working hard towards something difficult that you WANT, not something that is forced.

Agree, thank you for confirming. And very true about your resilience comment. 110% going to talk to the teacher about dialing it back. Thanks for your input!

I would definitely dial it back. If this is something you want your child to continue and not hate over time, I’d reduce the pressure. Sounds like the first teacher who was “laid back” may be the better choice.

Agree, too much pressure here and appreciate your comment as the sounding board! The other teacher was young and talented, but sat in the chair only and engagement was poor…so this one for sure, but have to talk to her about bringing it down a few notches. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for everyone’s time and comments! I’m going to talk to the teacher this week about bringing it down several steps. :) I appreciate the support!

Talk with the teacher. Tell her you're overwhelmed and want to be sure your kid keeps the joy of music. Try to work together for a plan that everybody is happy with.

I used to teach music privately to kids. Tears sometimes are a part of the normal learning process. As long as the student can see progress and achieve success on a regular and frequent basis (both little successes within each practice session and victories at lessons each week), he won't remember the little bumps. But if every single practice is full of tears and he never feels like he achieves success, he probably won't end up enjoying it or learning.

I love this teacher perspective, it is so helpful! Thank you for sharing. I’m going to do just that. :)
