First, it is important to acknowledge that your coworkers’ comments might be rooted in jealousy or a lack of visibility into your performance. While you mentioned your marital status, remember that gossip doesn't always care about facts, it cares about explaining why one person is "getting ahead" over others.
Does he ever make comments that are personal rather than professional?
Do these meetings happen behind closed doors with no clear agenda? Those are the important questions to ask.

Those are great questions to ask and I would also ask does he show favoritism towards you than the others. If not they are either seeing something in him or they are jealous of you. I would keep an eye out on both people.

Is he inappropriate in any way? Does he always have you work with him, or do you often work when he is off, and given tasks to complete?
Good managers are tasked with building a bench. That means we find the best employees we have, and we give them challenges. We want people that can do our jobs. We put them in charge when we're not there, and we expect great things.
And a good manager will go out of their way to ensure their protege does NOT feel uncomfortable.
