I love Die Hard and definitely feel that it's a Christmas Movie! I think I'll watch it tonight.

I watch it every Christmas Eve

I loved watching that film and would say It is a Christmas movie.
A Christmas movie is a feeling. A vibe. There are no rules beyond whether or not we say it's a Christmas movie. Was it intended to be a Christmas movie? No, probably not. But we have culturally accepted it as such, and that's good enough for me.

Possibly the best answer to this question I have ever seen.
No, it is not. The themes of the film have nothing to do with Christmas, the Christmas stuff is tangential. My favorite tangential Christmas stuff in a non-Christmas film would be in The Godfather. When Luca Brasi puts on his bulletproof vest he's got Christmas music on the radio. Even Luca loves Christmas. He should have stayed home listening to the radio.

OK, so let's look at Die Hard first. It is very much Christmas themed. The main female character is named Holly. McClain dresses up the terrorist in Christmas garb before sending the "Now I have a machine gun, ho ho ho" message. The broken glass that McClain runs through represents the ornaments that some families traditionally break. And the soundtrack consists mainly of Christmas songs. Also, the entire purpose of his visit is to celebrate Christmas with the family.
If Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, neither is Home Alone. First of all, they are the same movie. Even down to one of the bad guys pretending to be a cop.
If Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, then neither is It's A Wonderful Life. The theme of the movie is "Capitalism bad, bankers bad" And most of the movie isn't even set at Christmas. Interesting side note, IaWL bombed at the theatres when released. The only reason it became a Christmas classic is, the movie did so badly, the studio didn't bother to renew the copyright. So when local stations were looking for cheap programming, here was this royalty free movie that seemed to have Christmas themes (but really didn't). That created an interest in the movie that hadn't been there initially, and it grew into this cultural touchstone.
If Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, then neither is Elf. Elf is the story of a lost soul searching for his birth parents. Heck, Buddy isn't even an elf, nor is his adopted father (Bob Newhart). The only "person of short stature" in the movie with a significant speaking role is Peter Dinklage, Thus, if Elf is a Chrismas movie, then so is Game of Thrones ;)
If a Christmas movie is classified as such because a major character is a Christmas character, then The Devil Wears Prada is a Christmas movie. Because Steep's character is a real Grinch (and I am using the How I Met Your Mother definition of Grinch) (If you know you know)
Ok, I think I have made this absurd enough ;)
