Okay, well, it looks like the Federal Government is a dead end career wise right now. Does anyone have any insights into the job stability of State Government? Those jobs are more secure and safe, correct?

I'm not sure if any job is really safe these days. Government, private sector, it's all kind of up in the air right now. I'm just saving as much money as I can and not making any rash decisions about anything related to finances or my career. Maybe I'll have a job next year, maybe aliens will invade the planet. Either way, I'm just rolling with things as they come.

It could depend on your industry. States are having federal funding taken away with no warning so it's really hard to say. State police is one that I don't think would be affected much. I'm in drinking water and feel a little more safe than epidemiologists but nowhere near how I felt last year at this time. Like the previous comment, I think a lot of public and private job security is up in the air- a lot of systems in society are intertwined, it all needs money too.

I don't think any job at any level of government can be considered secure and safe these days. If the past few months haven't hammered this home for you, I'm not sure anything will. I'm getting out as soon as I can.

The Federal hiring freeze expires in July. Departments such as Defense and Homeland Security have not been impacted by the hiring freeze. Check out USAJobs.

Umm, it depends on the state I would think. And how dependent that state/ position is reliant on federal funding. But if you do find a job in state or local governments, make sure it is a union position. You will want that job protection.

It all depends on funding. And due to volatility in economy, it is going to fluctuate a lot.

Was just layed off from federal workforce. DOT. Very hard times

Irs?

Not all jobs within a state are secure, as much of their funding comes from the federal government. It's important to choose a department that does not heavily rely on grants. I worked for my state but had to move to a federal position due to a loss of funding, and some states also pay less.

No. I work for the state & they are threatening to fire us @ Social Security.

Retiring this Wednesday. Sigh…,

The hiring freeze will expire on July 15th according to The Whitehouse website.

What do you think about the mismatch of labor and employment laws and the modern nature of our economy after the technological boom? Am I the only one who thinks (and am I crazy to think) there are some benefits to workers from the gig economy, and it might be best long term to pass new employment laws to ensure worker protections while maintaining these benefits instead of trying to shove the current gig economy back into the 1960s? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’ve been with my current company for a little over 5 years now and since the start of the pandemic have been WFH. I absolutely love WFH and have always wanted a position in which I could WFH. There is talk of bringing everyone back to the office full time and that’s not what I would like to happen. I’ve been searching for a new position in which it would be a remote role. My current company also said I am maxed out in term of what they are willing to pay salary wise.
