Has anyone gone from BigLaw to a mid tier firm in their city? Any noticeable differences or just more of the same, esp around:
- Wk/life balance and expectations
- Quality of work
- Culture
- Opportunities and progression

Went from east-coast biglaw to regional firm on the west coast. Salary and bonus both much lower. Billable requirements for bonus at both are 1850, but something about the balance feels better at the regional firm. I enjoy the work, the people, and most of the clients. I moved over as a senior associate and plan to have the “when will I start being considered for partner?” talk later this year, once I’m a bit more established. But it was never going to happen at my last firm.

I moved from a BigLaw firm (west coast office) to a small law firm. Took about a 20% pay cut and it has been 100% worth it. I typically work 8:30-5:30, still make good money, and hardly ever have to work on weekends. I also don’t have a billable minimum. The work is not quite as interesting, but the trade off for the work life balance is worth it. My firm does somewhat niche work, so we are well respected in the area, but it’s for a fairly limited client base.
I’m not worried about my career prospects because the firm still has recognition, and having the biglaw firm on my resume opens a lot of doors. I think making a work/life balance decision and considering the trade offs is important when leaving biglaw. Another thing is that I don’t care about law firm prestige, and I think a lot of people don’t want to leave biglaw because they do care about being at a name brand firm, but you don’t have to have this to have a meaningful and successful career.

I went from a V100 to a highly regarded midsized LA firm with majority biglaw alums. Big institutional clients. Quality of work product, expectations, and billable hours exactly the same. Pay a little lower but laughable bonus. That said, great opportunities for partnership or in house exit. At my old firm's office there were no non-lateral partners, whereas here there are multiple attorneys ten years out of law school who have made partner.

Do partners make more than counsel or senior associates at the biglaw firm, though?

I have -and it really depends on the firm. Be aware that you will likely have far fewer resources than you are used to (no 24 hour business center, less sophisticated marketing department, etc.) I made a jump from a massive international firm to a much smaller firm which turned out to be a big mistake but it was so burned out at the time I just needed to get out of big law. I rebuilt my stamina and my practice over 2 years and went to Am Law 100 firm 7 years ago. Also, if there are things you need (put up for partner in 2 years, practice development budget, etc) get it in writing. Unless you’re getting the boot from big law (and maybe even if you are), you usually have some leverage before you start on these kinds of things that you may not be cognizant of. Also, if you don’t ask, you don’t get.

I’m curious as well! My highly ranked big law firm has a billable target of 1900 which is similar to most of the midsize law firms. I’m wondering what will the differences be in terms of work life balance.

My midsize firm is trying to be biglaw, a fact they hide during interviews and was revealed to me later. I was just subtly told that I should be working every Saturday and holiday going forward.

The established nonpartners laugh at the ambition of these newer partners. But unfortunately I don’t get to be so blasé when my income depends on it.

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

Mostly referring to toxic culture and zero work life balance. How true is this in this sales org and the company in general? This is a backfill role after a 3 year tenure for the person who left.
