Once, I was asked to commute 50 minutes to the office, five days a week. That raised a simple question for me: what is a reasonable commute, really? At what point do you think travel time destroys quality of life, energy, and focus? LOL.

In my case, I thanked the team and outright refused to continue that process since there were no possible alternative arrangements. And to this day I still think... two hours a day in transit! I'm sure many professionals can and will take it, but not me.

How much commute time one is willing to spend is a highly individual question as we all have our personal limit.

When I see a position I am interested in, I always look up the address and put it in Maps to see what the commute time is.

like

50 miles tops for me. I like driving, and it gives me time to decompress, but daily commute should not eat into your life like that.

like

Chicagoland, friend. I'm from here also. It's genetically engrained in my blood to navigate my vehicle aggressively. 🙃

That's way too much commute time. 30 minutes each way is about the extent of what I'm willing to do, and even that is pushing it. That said, if I was out of work in this current job market, I'd probably have to reconsider.

like

As a Certified Medical Assistant, I think that no more an half hour commute each way is sufficient, that's one hour of you day in travel combined with getting an hour getting showered and dressed is more than enough on a CMA pay rate. Gas and time=$ Anything more the travel time and gas isn't worth the pay.

like

Was it driving or mass transit? I would choose mass transit and try to nap.

When I used to travel to Philly everyday from work from the burbs, it was a great way to relax, sleep, listen to music, etc., before hitting the office, versus trying to drive it everyday and paying for parking. The cons to going via train was that when their was a cow on the tracks, you had to wait for someone to come out and move them off the tracks which would delay you even more...but to relax and not be uptight in traffic getting to your job for the few inconveniences was worth it, plus it cost less: less wear and tear on your car, gas, and not being caught in traffic.

Depends I think. When I lived in NYC a 45min train ride from deep in Brooklyn to Tribeca or midtown was normal. Those commuting from NJ could hit an hour or more. Felt very normal. But now I live in Florida and driving 45mins to work feels too long. 30 mins or less feels more reasonable.

like

In Atlanta, up to an hour commute is pretty normal unless you happen to live near the main areas where jobs are.

like

25-30 min seems livable

like

I think it depends on whether it makes sense for your career. For instance, I was looking to do a career change. But I couldn’t find jobs close to home. So I ended up taking a job 1.5 hrs away. Yeah it was tough but the location made it difficult for everyone else too. And I only planned to stay there for a couple years.

like

I love to drive so 45 minutes doesn’t bother me at all. Currently, my commute is only about 15 minutes and I feel it’s too short. I want to drive more. Even five minutes on mass transit is too long for me though. I want to drive.

Are they paying your traveling expenses and time?

My commute is an hour each way. I’ve been in this role for three months and 5 days in the office is starting to take its toll, not just on me but on my family. I’m away from home 11 hours per day, and my 11-yo daughter cries because she doesn’t get to spend enough time with me. But moving closer to downtown means uprooting her from her school and paying higher rent, plus I would still be spending on a monthly transit pass.

like

Yea not me, my 22 minute is pushing it lol

like

Clearly you did not want or need the job enough to make the small sacrifice of less than an hour commute. As a manager I would not want an employee working for me that is unwilling to invest so little into a career. Just an honest reply that I’m sure you won’t listen too.

like

I think 20-30 mins is my ideal commute but also acknowledge that many people commute 45 - over an hour every day

When they finally nabbed Willie Sutton, slippery bank robber from the 1920s, they asked him "Willy, how come you robbed banks?" His reply: "Because that's where the money is." You travel to where the $$ is, distance be damned.

When I lived in Lancaster, PA, I used to travel to Philadelphia everyday - a 3 hour trip round trip via Amtrak to make more money. When I look back on it, it was okay because I needed the money, but in all reality, it didn't give me a career at all for the people I worked with, rather it was just for a paycheck because Philly paid more and as a single parent at that time, I needed more money. In life, it usually boils down to two things...what do you want to give up...Money or Time? I didn't have a life at all. But you have to do what you have to do to survive. In today's economy, I imagine a lot of people are traveling a distance for a higher paying job, but hating to have to do so!

I spent five years with Amazon in the transportation group as a blue badge internal company driver & trainer (commercial driving of tractor-trailers). My commute was 70 miles one way into Denver; the shifts were 10x4. The money was good enough that it made the pain of the commute fairly negligible; but I separated from Amazon for many justified reasons and the excessive commute was one. You are right...and the typical economic demographics highlight one aspect of economic prosperity as having a reasonable commute for example 15, 20, 25 or even 30 minutes.

I had a job which I was laid off last Friday from on my last month of probation, I was laid off abruptly without any notice. It used to be in-person role where I travelled an hour to the and an hour from office, after my last which was hybrid mode. Productivity was affected because of the 2 hours commuting, This will be my last role I have to commute to the office, it doesn't make sense financially to be hones.

Had an interview for an associate position at Citi. Interviewee was based in London and I’m in NYC. The only interview time that worked was 6am. I was barely functioning and feel like I truly messed up in my answers because I couldn’t not think clearly. I have another with the head of the division next week again at 6am (pre determined before this interview). It was also hard because the division’s core work is private enough that there was not much prep I could do beforehand. Tips?

Had my 2nd interview with the hiring manager this past Friday & sent a thank you shortly after. It's now Tuesday (for those who see this on another day). At the end of the interview he said they've had other people who were interested but only one other person besides me were they considering. Said he would talk to his team and possibly have me fly out to meet in person. How long should I wait to follow up without seeming pushy? Also welcome any other tips to separate me from other candidate.
