China’s stats looks really good when they make them all up. Belgium and Finland are small ubiquitous populations with their security subsidized by US tax dollars - make them raise an army to defend against Russia and see how good their education is.
Who's choice is it that the U.S. is subsidizing the world's security? No one is making us do it. I get your point about the homogeneity of many European countries relative to the U.S. and that's definitely a factor. But you can't ignore the incentive structures that have been created around public education, specifically the lack of accountability and subsidizing poor performance, and wonder why the state of public education is what it is.
Yeah it's a shame that public education in this country has been hijacked by the labor movement. The primary objective of public schools in America is to provide job security to as many unionized workers as possible rather than educating children. New York spends around twice the amount Finland spends per student on education and yet gets far worse results because the money isn't spent on educating children but on helping the public employees unions gain more dues paying members.
