It's the operations guy, who does pretty much every single job. My boss, his boss, probably their boss too, everyone asks him what they're supposed to be doing. It's crazy how much he's in charge of. We're screwed if he ever leaves.

So true. Every workplace has that person, the unofficial Google, fixer, and decision-maker all in one. Titles don’t mean much when one person actually keeps the place running.
It's funny you bring this up, I was talking to someone about this kind of situation the other day. We have a top manager whose assistant seems to be running things. If you need something done, it's better to ask her than to ask her boss, who will probably forget about it. Once you know that an administrative assistant is actually running things, a lot of things become much easier.

Once you figure out who actually knows how things get done, everything suddenly runs smoother..titles aside.
