If a specific example is mentioned then I find it to be a very helpful reminder, especially as a strength. If I found something to be a DA or thought there could be improvement in one category then it won’t change my rating just because the reviewee felt otherwise.
Agree with both M1 and AS1. I'll add that they're also helpful to identify differences in expectations between reviewee and reviewer. If the reviewee thinks they knocked something out of the park but in reality fell short of the market, it's really helpful to discuss that so that they understand the gap. I've had the opposite happen, too: reviewee thinks they were below average, but I actually really liked their work and want them to continue.
They are rarely filled out before I go to write.
Potentially - its not necessarily the grade you give yourself but more about the rationale. If you have a good argument as to why you deserve a rating then it could tip the scales if I am on the fence about it.
It also is used as a check to make sure you are self-aware of where you are at. If you are filling out all exceedings but are actually below expectations then it shows a gap in understanding of where you are at.
