Earn and burn, baby
I find the sweet spot by taking enough long haul trips and using points for business class on said long hauls. At saver rates for me and my wife, that typically keeps our earn to burn roughly equivalent
Unless you have a specific goal in mind, such as a honeymoon, use them before they get devalued .
Hotel points are particularly bad for devaluation, so I use them as they come. I was saving up for a week at a Colorado Marriott for ski season but the nightly cost has increased nearly 50% (90k to 130k per night)
I keep a moderate airline balance in case I need to book a last minute flight for personal / family emergencies.
It usually makes sense to use your points sooner rather than holding on to them for too long, as their purchasing power can decline and reward prices may go up. Airlines, hotels etc are all increasing the points needed for the same rewards, so your points are worth less over time... so why not use them when they're at their best value?
