This is pretty bad journalism.
1. There's no direct comparison between the rate of layoffs previously and the rate today. Layoffs have always been part of our economy.
2. It just regurgitates the reason companies have stated for layoffs: AI. But it doesn't actually test whether this is true or actually a cover for another reason (in particular: it was much easier to hire in a low-interest rate environment, and execs are now looking for a timely and cool excuse).
3. It's filled with so many anecdotes and personal stories as "evidence". And most of the statistics are questionable and based on surveys.
They know what they're doing! It absolutely pulls on your heartstrings. But here's an even more sobering thought: this article is just feeding on "bad news" for clicks.
Maybe this doesn't stand out because so much journalism today is written this way. But we should be very careful not to let it inform our impression of the world. They're telling a very clear story here... but it's tough to tell from the article if it's actually true.
Bravo, refreshing to see some critical thinking instead of the usual passional reactions on the internet
The piece is spot on describing the state of the current market and the structural change. It is not at the same level comparing in great ressession back in 08/09. I just got back into the market after wrapping up 1-year gig, the market is in a worst shape from last year when I was looking.
Sensationalism is uses by journalists to get a click…
Then invest in AI adjacent stocks and retire early
