Yes, we have procedures in place, but not a policy yet. Add language to every class syllabus to the effect that AI use is prohibited without consent of teacher, and if it’s not spelled out on an assignment, then no use allowed and using it is cheating. Unapproved use is subject to failing the assignment and/or class.

I think there should definitely be a policy in place. As a teacher, I don't ban AI use if I give permission. Unless the permissions are granted, students know it is not allowed. I do try to have a few assignments where they can use an AI Generator for an image or up to 25 words, but they have to attribute the use. I do have an ulterior motive. Let the students try to detect AI use in images and speech. It may backfire on mme, but I have fun with it!
That's a really interesting case. I'm not too sympathetic to the parents, saying the kid didn't plagiarize because there's no set policy is pretty weak. But, legally it might work. We don't have a set policy about AI use, and while I've tried to discourage its use for schoolwork, I recognize it's probably a losing battle. Kids are going to experiment with anything new, and something like AI is just too tempting.
Welll…. That teacher has a PhD, is in charge of wasc , and teaches ight school at a college.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I agree, this is only the beginning.

I agree. Schools need to come up with a basic policy - at least! Teacher feel frustrated that there hasn't been enough guidance on the issue
The problem is that unless the admit to it , the AI detectors can only say with a % that it may be Ai. Most students know how to throw in wonky grammar or tweak a word or two (or even ask chat gpt to “write this paragraph so it won’t be detected by an AI plagiarism check” . Unless they write in in class on locked browser or on paper- they are using chat gpt

It is scary to think how easy it is to cheat. The thing is a lot of the students who use the AI tools to cheat, are the ones who would cheat anyway.

Honestly, I think the possibilities of students using AI has helped me become more thorough in grading papers.
