I'm interested in why people think we will have such a talent gap. Americans are plenty smart enough to do these jobs, and that's part of the conflict I think. A lot of US citizens graduate from top tier schools and don't get considered for some of these jobs, so I don't think we'll be lacking talent as much as everyone assumes
I don't see any point to trying to shoehorn AI issues into the immigration debate. A lot of the controversy about the visas and highly skilled tech workers is really about having a class of workers that's constrained. If your immigration status is tied to your job, you have to accept conditions. An American would be free to say no thanks and go off to a better job.
I think AI is already having an impact on slowing job growth. And I do think it can help reduce reliance on H1Bs.
Some companies are probably looking for H1Bs with some AI experience, but I think we have an opportunity now to train the us workforce to implement the most recent AI tools.
