Did you guys see Danny’s Instagram post?
My suspicion - whether he drives or not - he still gets paid for 2023
That’s crazy. And given how competitive it’s getting for Indycar talent that was a dumb move by CGR.
Danny Ric can’t feel too confident about his future.
Danny will be out of a job soon. Too much talent coming up and he isn’t keeping up.
The Arrow McLaren SP team are just renaming their team to McLaren next year in IndyCar, therefore Palou has signed for two IndyCar teams for next year - anyone remember Jenson Button being in a similar situation while at Williams early in his F1 career?
While not currently performing at the level of Lando, there is no doubt in the talent and ability of Danny Ric and he is an attractive commercial asset for McLaren too.
That said, rumors have been circling and Zak Brown has been a prominent voice regarding the #1 strategic focus of the sport by US owners Liberty Media as they execute their effective strategy that has already yielded phenomenal growth both in popularity metrics and in financial returns and investments from US fans and companies. Zak increasingly capitalizes on that growth by leveraging his personal experience in US motorsport and his many business operations. To further maximize his and McLaren’s potential opportunities from F1’s success in the US, Zak frequently speaks of his desire to bring American driver, Colton Herta, onboard at the Woking-based team.
I personally, am not sure that justifies giving a seat to Herta, especially over Daniel, but regardless, McLaren this weekend reasserted their confidence in Daniel and restated the fact that Daniel is locked in behind the wheel of the prominent-papaya orange McLaren F1 car through to the end of the 2023 season.
That strategy makes sense as Herta is young, so can afford the time to learn and demonstrate consistent performances in IndyCar (a series that features many F1 protégés and alumni) and to slowly adjust and transition to the very different challenges F1 poses.
At the same time, Daniel is closing the gap to Lando, so he has that opportunity to settle into the new cars and regulations introduced this year to really see what he can do.
On a broader scale, we will see what market potential F1 has in the US, especially as by the end of 2023, there will have been three US races; an ever increasing popular race in Austin, Texas, an undoubtedly updated Miami race that was hugely successful this year but has many areas in which to improve, and of course the reinvented and spectacular night race in Las Vegas.
Given the vast amount of unknowns, by the end of 2023 McLaren and the other teams will have so many more data points in which to more effectively create the most optimal strategy, and in this case, that includes who will be driving for the storied team in the future. For now, take your time Daniel and settle into that Papaya New Era McLaren and come back after Hungary and after the summer break and show us what the Honey Badger can do.
