FIA contradicting itself? Color me surprised! All of us want him gone, but in all honesty, I don’t think he’s going anywhere. Do you see a lack of reaction / outrage from the media?! Even Sky, they don’t seem too call it out! What happened on Sunday was not normal! The FIA will back him. Plus I don’t think there is any one ‘qualified’ enough to replace him. Ross Brawn could be a great replacement (he’s stepping down next year), but not sure if he would want it. We’re stuck with Masi. Maybe he stays on the race director and someone else can be the safety delegate - he’s doing both jobs now.
Apparently Laurent Mekies was expected to take over after Charlie’s passing (he was a true gent - commanded both request and authority). He was the deputy race director, but Ferrari snatched him up.
F1 rules are some of the most complex of any sport. Between a race director that is a stickler for rules and is ok with finishing a race under safety car, or one that gives us one of the most nerve racking laps in F1 history, I’ll take the former. Only other option he had would have been what D1 calls out, but who would want to see Max try to make his way through back markers when there was so much at play.
The heart of the matter is not what Masi did or didn’t do. The heart of the matter is that RB read the situation brilliantly and put Max in a position of strength. Merc tried to play it safe and it didn’t work out for them. I think Masi should stay. I hope the sport continues to prioritize racing and spectacle.
Stickler for the rules when talking about disqualification of a car because of a 0.2 mm infringement but happy to ignore the rules for a safety car restart
Only if he leaves on his own to “spend time with family.” Sacking him would acknowledge a mistake was made.

Maybe RB can hire him after his ‘gardening leave’
If they had gone by the precedence set earlier, the decision to allow ‘all’ lapped cars to unlap and then resume the race would have resulted in a safety car finish.
They should have stuck by the initial decision of not allowing cars to unlap and resuming the race which would have resulted in 1 or 2 laps. This would also be a fair challenge for max with the new soft tires as he would have a few back-markers ahead and would have given Lewis an opportunity to fight for keeping his place with the 44 lap old tires.
Whichever way Masi decided, he was going to be on the receiving end of the ire of the loser’s team and fans.
