Test tube babies and “regular” babies are made differently but we don’t distinguish people based on how they were made 😛..
I think lab grown diamonds are great. I fully intend to buy diamond studs and a pendant at some point.
The only thing that matters is whether it'll bother you. This is the most sentimental piece of jewelry you'll probably ever have and you'll be showing it off a ton. Make sure you don't have any associations or insecurities around lab grown diamonds that will bother you. (I'm not saying you should- again, I think they're great!)
If you do buy a lab grown diamond, I would stick with a size that you would have been able to afford in a natural diamond and pocket the savings. Itll look more realistic that way.
Not to be a downer but there’s no such thing as a “cruelty free” diamond - anything that resembles or is a diamond regardless of how it’s mined perpetuates the inflation of diamonds and thus the industry itself. I say that as someone who absolutely loves them. There’s of course ways to minimize your particular stone’s impact, but just FYI. Congratulations!!
If you haven’t already, try to go into a store to try on mines vs lab grown diamonds. You likely won’t notice the difference. When I went in to try things on, I actually ended up going with a sapphire 🤷♀️ I planned in my head to get an oval diamond and when I tried it on, it just didn’t feel right. You never really know how it’ll look on you until you test it out.
Personally, I’d prefer a lab-grown diamond doe the exact reasons your boyfriend mentioned! I honestly think that there are very few people left that would judge you for wearing a lab-grown diamond instead of mined (and no one would be able to tell anyway!)
The thing with diamonds (and luxury items in general) is that they’re a celebration of the fact that you can afford something, or that you made a “sacrifice” to afford that thing. Which is why for most people the actual look is secondary if a certain item is expensive (otherwise the whole real vs lab grown debate wouldn’t be a thing). They’re not rational purchases.
If you’re willing to overlook this (and I think you are), give this a thought - would a lab-grown diamond ring mean the same to you? Would you see it as being “less than” for the period you’re going to wear it? If the answers are “yes” and “no”, then go for it. I’d ask for the savings to be spent on your honeymoon or actual wedding rings...
Nah get the real deal. I saved for over a year to purchase a VVs1 H clarity 2.5 ct round brilliant diamond.
