Corruption. It’s the future we have to look forward to when conservatives end democracy.

There’s still something that makes our fighting forces actually effective though, in spite of that. Something Russia doesn’t have. Maybe “corruption” is too simplistic a word here, but I think you know what I’m getting at?
What tech advantage? Also, land doesn’t = morale or people.
Russian military organization is extremely hierarchical and top down in decision making, to the extent that a lot of on ground tactical execution requires multiple layers of approvals.
In contrast, most of western commands including how Ukraine is trained, is semi decentralized with lots of tactical and also some strategic decision making power on independent units.
This stark contrast has become quite evident during Ukraine war, which requires a lot of nimble and fast decision making given how quickly the things are changing.
Not a vet, but based on stories from a few folks, I'm pretty sure their units straight up couldn't function without NCOs. To the extent you'd need a horde of MPs if you even wanted people show up. Though I guess that is what Russia has set up, with Chechens aimed at their troops backs...
Theft, greed, corruption, inexperienced soldiers, and a total lack of morale. If anything, Ukraine has shown that, apart from nuclear weapons, no major power is scared of Russia’s military.

Corruption, logistics, deliberate lack of communication, and lack of change in tactics (no NCO corps leaders)

Corruption - Putin and his buddies have been living the high life using the military budget.

I've read that a lot of the 'good' military tech got handed out to commanders who in turn either sold it themselves for profit or warehoused it knowing they'd need to account for it later (which meant nobody got to train with it). Then, even when bits and pieces of it emerged from storage for the fighting in Ukraine in variable condition, nobody knew how to use the stuff which made it essentially worthless.

Don’t forget that China got its ass kicked by Vietnam. Big does not equal good. The Rooskies got wasted by the Japanese in ought-five and destroyed by the Germans in WW1. They also had trouble beating tiny Finland in 1940.

They did ok against Hitler and Napoleon.

Yeah, that was the Russian winter...
Governments are never efficient. Armies are also run by governments. So the result isn’t surprising.
Russia’s government is extra corrupt partially because of the Soviet inheritance.

Same reason the US lost in Afghanistan and Vietnam.
