It’s not excessive to spend a months salary on a watch? Fascinating
Doubtful. It is entry level Rolex that you can walk into any AD and get. The models that will hold their value are the models that are difficult to find and highly desirable.
First of all, this watch is a classic and should be absolutely fine holding its value.
As for the Manager-level question, these watches started at a~$7K. That’s not excessive for someone making what I would assume to be a salary of at least ~$120K. You’re a manager, I’d say go for it and enjoy the piece!
DJ with a fluted bezel and a steel bracelet. I was debating between fluted or not, and decided if I was going to buy a Rolex this was one of the distinguishing characteristics. With a flat bezel it looks like any other watch.
I got a new Rolex Submariner for my Manager promotion watch. It was a bit pricey for my taste ($8.5k) but my first luxury watch and I talked to a Director and Partner and got the 👍 before I made the plunge. They assured me I deserved it and wasn’t being too pretentious bc I worked my ass off and I’ll get motivated each time I look at it when times are tough :)

How is it appropriate if you are client facing? When I was a client I would just see $$ signs and know that we were paying too much for their services. Time to renegotiate.
IBM 1 thanks! Is it the two toned one?
Two toned as in gold and silver? Probably too much. If you are gonna get the DJ be sure that you do not get the fluted bezel. It will be too dressy. After all you’re going to work and not a formal event. Also don’t get the jubilee bracelet. Again too dressy. Unless you want to look like some dbag from Wall Street circa 1986.
Datejust with the fluted bezel on a leather strap is great for wearing something casual with an air of elegance
Got an oyster perpetual for my wedding ..worth it !!!
I’ll be biased and say any Rolex as a manager will be received well (assuming your subordinates understand the prestige and opulence of having a nice watch).
Of course, I’d recommend the Submariner or GMT Master. I feel like Datejusts are for people over 65+ (or Mobsters).
In terms of value, Rolex’s will appreciate over the long run. A 1959 Submariner is going to Christie’s auction for around $300-600k USD.
Also consider this, in Canada, a brand new Submariner is $9661 CAD tax included. Whereas a 2016 in mint condition (warranty, box & papers included) is $9800 CAD.
i think it is an appropriate watch and will hold its value ok. the scenarios some of the posters above focused on are not as common as they make it seem. your watch probably will
not appreciate in value unless for some reason t becomes a collectible. but it will still be worth something if you want to sell it or trade up.
@C2: of you’ve been saving up for it and that’s your passion then why not
Well when you’re AT the client site, that’s a different issue..
Is the two tone version considered tacky for young 30s wearers?
Good luck getting any type of steel sports model right now. DJ is easy to find and a classic.
I’m 31 and have a Datejust and absolutely love it, but frankly, wear it sparingly. Definitely treat yourself! It’s a beautiful watch and is timeless
Get the sub or explorer or gmt.
