How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. I’ve been at my current firm 3 years and got the call again, again about an opportunity that is hard to pass up. I don’t like having a reputation of a flight risk, but this keeps happening. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.

The question is how many is too many. It’s more do you have a good reason for the moves you’ve made.

You should do what’s best for you…hopefully I can take my own advice. I went to a regional firm as a first year. Realized I was working insane hours for half the pay. Lateraled (and retooled) to a “big law” firm, that does not pay market, 6 months ago. Still working a ton and keep getting calls from recruiters for spots at top firms. Thinking about jumping another time and testing my metal.

I think firms are happy to get 3 years out of solid associates/counsel. Take the opportunity if it feels right!

THIS. Ive been practicing 12 years, moved to a v10 3 months ago and desperately miss my v25. i'll likely go back to my v25 after December bonus, even with slim chance of making partner.

For context: i've worked at 3 firms (the v10 being my third).

Second year associate, started at a new firm recently and got put on a fast paced transaction. Made mistakes (drafting errors and tardiness to a call) that feel irredeemable… although no one has scolded me yet.
