I might do camera on for like half of them, and say, oh, I’m not camera ready for the others. It is really tiring, even when you don’t feel scrutinized. Another thing to blame for camera off occasionally is your WiFi. This way, you’re on board but not 100%.
If the job is mainly remote - then I get it that your VP wants cameras on. It’s weird to speak to a virtual room where the only one on camera is you. It’s frankly odd.
I don’t really get why you would feel more scrutinised just because you are a woman. So what? I’m a woman too and worked as an engineer for many years - the only woman worldwide for a long time. Nobody cared. And neither should you.
I am big about cameras on because it helps “connection” in a remote setting. However, it gets exhausting after several hours of being on camera. I now just put my camera on for close team meetings and 1:1’s so there’s a connection. When it’s a larger meeting I’m camera off.
I don’t love it when I have to have my camera on, but I don’t stress out about being watched if they are. If you’re in a group meeting, I’m not sure why you think people are looking at you more than anyone else?
