Today is my first day of going reduced hours to stay home with our little one. While I am thrilled, I cant help feeling guilty that I’m not working. Someone please tell me this is normal.

Welcome to motherhood - no matter what you do, you will feel guilty 😉

You are not “not working.” You get the best of both worlds - quality time with your little while still keeping your foot in the working door. Congrats on getting this set up with your work!

LOL — It’s an adjustment, but on my days at home I leaned into the perspective that my “job” those days was child care.

How did you do this? I’ve been contemplating it….

We have a pretty collaborative team and my team leader is amazing! We are actually in the process of preparing for a trial (not the best timing) and knowing I’m now on a reduced schedule, the partner reassigned some work. Which I was happy to give up. I need to keep my boundaries or they will work me full time and pay me a reduced salary. Do I feel a little guilty - yes, but I need to maintain my boundaries.

Went reduced hours but eventually left big law for this reason. I went 7 years thinking that it wasn’t a guarantee to get federal holidays off. I now work at a firm where they shut down the office and do not expect anyone (including attorneys) to work on a holiday. This Monday was my first guilt-free and work-free Labor Day — it was glorious. All this to say that I think big law conditions you to feel a certain way to maximize utilization, and it’s not the healthiest mindset in the world. That’s why I ultimately quit. Because even part-time didn’t eliminate that issue. Being truly part-time is necessarily dependent on others respecting your boundaries, but if the expectation is that you’re not really allowed to have boundaries for even yourself, how will you respect others’?

Highly recommend the book “The Power Pause” if you have time for a quick read! What you feel is completely normal and common for primary parents who make similar career choices, but it’s really no source of guilt once you reason through it

I haven’t heard of this book but will give it a read!
