I have a cipp/us, it requires a pretty basic knowledge in most us privacy laws in various sectors. I work in employment law so I don’t use it much, but I’m hoping to move to a more privacy focused law position in the next few years. The cipp/European law may be more beneficial if you want to work in larger companies that have to comply with the gdpr

like

The exam was pretty straightforward (though I had taken a privacy law class in law school) the IAPP distributes a booklet that provides an overview of all the different laws that will be on the test - I reviewed it for a few nights before the exam

like

A friend just did the European version which I supposedly more difficult than the US version

like

Following. I’d love to know if it’s worth taking more than one, or if something more difficult like the CIPP/e would be sufficient.

like

Never mind, checked their website and figured it out since they have FIP for those with a CIPP plus a CIPM.

like

I have a CIPP/US - it provided a pretty good background in US privacy law and recruiters certainly love to see it on your LinkedIn profile and resume. However it won’t be a replacement for working somewhere that gives you a good deal of day-to-day privacy work to further sharpen your skills. That’s honestly been the issue with me which is why I’ve shifted practice areas.

like

Thanks! I already have some privacy experience so I think this might be a good certification to get if I want to continue in that area!

Highly recommend because it signals minimal competency in privacy, clients seem to like it (a lot of mine are certified as well), and the IAPP generally has been an amazing resource.

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

Has anyone done a survey for Capvision? I did one on ediscovery vendors that was supposed to pay $100, and now they are asking for bank details to transfer the payment. I’ve done surveys for Newton and they pay by gift card. So I’m a bit hesitant to put in my bank info here—seems like it could be an elaborate phishing scam?

I have a promising interview at a relatively large law firm in my area (+100 attorneys) next week. The position is for a transactional role in their real estate practice group, and they are seeking someone with at least 2 YOE. I have a bit over 7 YOE with a strong real estate/commercial lit. background. Over the past two years in my current position, I've been doing a lot more transactional work. The split is around 50% transactional and 50% lit.

Let’s talk suits. Do you have any thoughts on a junior associate wearing an expensive suit or a suit that departs from the norm (eg subtle pinstripe navy suit, or a suit with larger lapels/peaked lapels?). I’m thinking about upgrading my suit, but I don’t want to piss anyone off with a suit screaming the message “I’ve made it” when I’m just a junior associate. Perhaps it’s just all in my head and no one actually cares.
