Who has made the leap from working/living in the US to abroad? Any words of advice?

If you’re under 31, look at the Working Holiday visa in Australia. I was approved overnight, cost a couple hundred bucks, gives you the ability to work for a year. I quit my job, sold everything, and moved to Sydney. After 5 months of freelancing, I went full time at R/GA and was sponsored for up to 4 more years. Any questions, holler, it was one of the best things I’ve ever done

Made the opposite leap. Living abroad to working and living in US. My advice is live in a blue state.

It doesn’t have to be an if-this-than-that decision. I made the leap and married a broad a few years back — we still live/ work in the US. 😜

Advice? Do it before getting married or having kids. Dependents make things harder, on the personal level and on the professional level too (employers find it harder to sponsor a family and helping them settle vs a single person sponsorship). If you're finding it hard with a pet and a partner, imagine 5 or 10 years from now!

I would say just start applying for jobs. You can do all the thinking and planning but ultimately, you have to start somewhere and a job is what you’ll need. I did the same thing in reverse 6 years ago and its best thing I ever did. I didn’t have a plan, other than, move to NY. So I called a recruiter, got an interview, got a job and then got on a plane. I had no clue what to expect but it’s fine, you figure it out. Oh, and look into quarantine for the pets because that bit takes a while. Good luck!

Well that’s a good point, EVP, I like it too. It is the best ethnography you can do :)

Most places, it helps to have a clear path to permanent residency or citizenship. Just something to consider.

I am very fortunate in that I have dual US/EU citizenship (although that may come to an end next spring), but my work experience thus far has been entirely US-based. Because of that I'm not sure how to quite approach the EU job market or the transition of moving over. (I also have a human partner who's a US-citizen and our pets to consider.) I know that I'll have an easier go of things once I begin researching my options and reaching out to potential contacts, but I'm feeling a bit stuck in the whole "getting started" phase right now. 😫 This shit feels very daunting, but certainly not impossible, and I'd love any feedback!

I did it for a number of years. It’s interesting in that I didn’t feel particularly close to my fellow Americans before I left, but after living in another country for a few years realized that we’re more alike than different here compared with other cultures. Some good life lessons learned along the way, but I’m glad I’m back here.

If you’re considering Europe, space will be a thing. Definitely take much less than you have now, closet space is really small! Also, nothing is 24-hours, many things don’t open on Sunday and customer service is not as important as it is in the US. Just some practical information !

I moved from another country to NYC. You're right - we are more alike than you'd imagine :)

OP, go for a global role. It’s much easier to prove your US worth, gain EU experience and then have options.

I'm currently in a process for senior associate at a Big4. The process began on July, yet between the first and second interview it took like 3-4 weeks. And between the 2nd and 3rd like 7 weeks. I sent an email to HR during those weeks asking for an update and didn't have an answer. Then it a 3rd one was scheduled three times (the manager didn't connect to the first 2) and next week I have the last interview with 1 partner. Is the timing normal? Or were they looking for other candidates or what?
