No, we've never done anything like that. We just get back to business. I always try to welcome the students by talking a bit about their summer, more or less as a transition into the school year and what we'll be studying. But food trucks and a giant slide might make more impact, I must say!

It is amazing! My favorite thing is when a parent or student asks what the price is for the food and drinks, and you can tell them it us free. One of our incoming 6th graders leaned in to where I was helping them register for the drawings, and whispered "How much does the food cost?" When I told him it was free, his eyes lit up, and he was so excited.
A third grader using a smart watch (2012) to email her mom from the restroom. Then I got a call from the mom asking what was going on.

We had that happen last year during an important day. The mom just showed up the pick up her child during the event (a no cell phone time). She said her child had started her period and "bled through". Now I understand the seriousness of the situation, but the student "didn't have her phone" and that momma is noy a psychic! 🤔
