All the time. Anytime I was made fun of or bullied it was "oh you just need to be strong." But I didn't hear them saying that to other kids that weren't the same color as me. And I feel like I have heard it even in my adult life and it drives me insane. Futher proof we are not all held to the same standards.
100%. Whenever I tried expressing stress as a student I was accused of being aggressive, or overdramatic, when I just needed help. It's less pervasive in corporate, but I don't think the expectation is gone.
I wasn’t. When I had an issue in school, my parents were there to defend me and then some. My parents really strived to instill confidence in me and reminded me to hold my head high to shine. I feel pretty confident in resolving issues now and know when to ask for and accept help. I was surprised to learn how common this “strong” expectation was for some Black women though. How is the expectation impacting you in graduate school?

Unfortunately, people expect black women to take a lot of facial and body blows… Like we’re not women or even full and complete human beings
We are always expected to be the bigger person while simultaneously being accused of or seen as the smaller person
