I hear you. I have been feeling the same after 26 years of teaching and I am only 50. I’m in a situation of the golden handcuffs. If I leave I loose seniority, tenure and it messes with my retirement. If I was younger I’d try to move to another district to see if that changes things, change grade levels or go back to school for another credential. Now I look for the positives. There are many students who actually want to learn and I do my best to provide that.
You have to preserve your mental health.
The people I know who opted for an early retirement (post pandemic) are now working elsewhere. They have No regrets.
It’s so sad that so many people feel this way in education right now. It’s also very telling.
I understand. For me, money is the issue. It is the best money for something I like. It is the adults that are the problem
My side gig, which could turn into full time, is the public library. I work on the adult side planning fun programs (teaching adult crafts, plant swapping, technology, etc.), setting up book displays, answering reference questions, etc. I'm still using my teaching skills, but NO stress.
I totally understand your question. I teach middle school and this is the 3rd year in which I am questioning this profession. I am open for another career.
Argh similar here. It's the other adults making me reconsider - admin piling on and taking me away from students and my content. My colleagues are bringing in worse drama then any high school drama --- makes it so hard to focus on my room.
Been considering curriculum jobs. Also heard some former teachers shift into museum education
Insurance is a great business. You can help people plan for their retirement, save for college, and reduce taxes.
Design Professional Development courses for corporations.
Also, please, someone, design better ones for us, too, ASAP!
We sadly have some "trainers" in charge who clearly are there to keep them out of the classroom. Especially in tech training, teachers are sadly in need of higher quality leaders and peer teachers. I know that more $ is in private sectors, but please at least start out in public ed for us, thank you!
I bartend weddings. The money is ridiculous
Sell insurance, be a junior analyst, work in curriculum, counselor
Is there anything in your teaching focus and directly transfer into a private sector? Example, I know somebody who was a History teacher. They left to be a tour guide. Better pay, traveled for free (world wide) and used their love of history to discuss with their tour groups. I was just the opposite...retired early and used my prior career to start teaching (CTE).
