Every day, with a two day grace period. At some point, you get pay docked and associates lose eligibility for bonuses. I think that is something like 12 violations. Big firm. Huge.
Currently at a boutique firm. Expectation is daily. There's no penalty if it isn't done, but managing partner does monitor and let us know if we are falling behind (more than 3 days late definitely will see an email).
Prior firms had a weekly requirement with no issue as long as it was all in by month's end. At one firm we had an associate who did miss the monthly deadline periodically and while I don't know if he had any penalties, he did have to tell the billing partner for each of his matters that they needed to rerun bills because his time was missed. That would be all the motivation I'd ever need to not let that happen more than once. Eeek!
Daily but no penalty for not meeting it. Over 300 attorneys.
Pro
Small firm, generally due the day before monthly statements go out but heavily encouraged to be input daily. I use a timer on the billing software so my billing happens as I work (which I definitely recommend).
Weekly
Small firm. Entries due on the first of the month for the prior month. No penalty but probably if I was late the partners would be emailing me or in my office asking me to get it done and explaining that this is how the firm makes money. I'm probably always the first associate done so idk what would happen.
“Every day” but need to average within 3 days. Works out to you can do it once a week and still be in compliance. Different levels of pay increase docking if you don’t average 3 or under for the year, from 500 to (I think) 2500. big law
Big, big firm. Weekly deadlines (midweek of the following week) and 1 freebie for the first instance when you miss the deadline. After that, penalties start being deducted from your EOY bonus. No real idea how much the deductions are but I generally understand that they start at $100 and are on a graduated scale from there.
Boutique corporate firm. Weekly on Friday night or Monday morning. Usually just get a “friendly reminder” email when missing the deadline.
