Would you be as "peeved" if they randomly popped by your desk? It seems like the virtual equivalent. If your in-person response would normally be "Give me one sec to finish this up", then use the same response to the spontaneous call: i.e. "Let me call you right back, just trying to wrap something up real quick".

Yes I would be, if the interrupted what I was in the middle of. If they say, “let me know when you have a minute” or “are you free?” Then I’m okay with that. Just like receiving a call…
I get what you're saying, but people contacting us is just part of life and part of work. If it's a call that requires some time or prep, you just have to say you'll call them back and set a time. I've found that's usually okay, most people don't assume we're sitting doing nothing and waiting for their calls.
Happens to me all the time and it drives me nuts. I'm a visual guy so I 'd rather someone type and visualize questions/answers that take a fraction of the time of a phone call unless it is absolutely necessary. Courtesy messages make it a lot more tolerable though
If someone abuses the privilege without the authority, then use the Mute button on them if your Teams administrator has allowed you to use it.
People should have more respect for your time. I would be annoyed if someone kept dropping by my desk with no heads up. We all got work to do. Only people dropping by all the time are people who have little work to do or do not know how to execute.

I’m kind of with you on that. A random call out of the blue can feel jarring, especially if you’re mid-task or not in a great spot to talk. A quick “Got a minute?” message first just feels more respectful.

I agree.
If it’s a pet peeve just send them to voicemail. They’ll think you were busy and you can listen/read the vm later at a better time.
I would rather someone call me out of the blue than send a message saying hey without getting to the point or asking if I have a minute to talk. If I don’t, then I won’t pickup and I’ll message or call them back later. When they call and apologize for it being out of the blue I just think to myself ‘hey don’t apologize this is part of the job, so let’s get down to it.’ To me it allows us to get things done more efficiently rather than spending even a few minutes coordinating a time to chat or blocking off an entire half hour to meet. All that said I have worked with plenty of people on each side of this. Oh and to your point about finding a quiet place, it did take some getting used to having a conversation in the office where others could hear but I eventually got past that and very used to it to where it stopped even crossing my mind. Good question and interesting perspectives!
YES! I WFH, but I like to have my headphones in when I take a call...and not be in the middle of something. I have one coworker who does this frequently, and sometimes it's a quick question and sometimes not. They're quite the talker too. 😐 Everyone else just messages or at least will ask or give a warning.
I'm not a phone person anyway and would rather be able to read the communication so I can more easily process it, but I understand if it's something urgent. That's not the case here! At least not urgent enough that they can't send a quick message first. It's a pet peeve of mine.
