In my opinion, Raleigh is a great place to raise a family, and it’s got a lot of things going for it. It’s grown and changed a great deal in the last twenty years, with so much more culture and tons of new restaurants of all sorts than when we arrived in 2000. It’s close to the beach and the mountains, the people who live here are largely friendly and welcoming, and the weather Oct-April is wonderful. Plus Raleigh is filled with green spaces, biking / hiking trails, and lakes. Also, healthcare delivery organizations and universities here are both seriously top notch, and traffic is not bad even in the most rush hour situation (even where some people complain).
The cons: the humidity and heat May-Sept are no joke, and there is definitely still room for many more good ethnic restaurants here. Some elementary through high school schools are quite good but some are not, and the school district is very complicated with neighborhood, charter and magnet schools all part of the process. It is also still the Bible Belt, even where diversity of the population has really exploded and expanded the types of people living here - the Bible Belt mentality can definitely still be found in NC as a whole, though, even where Raleigh / Durham is a generally open-minded area. I also wouldn’t want to live here if I was a single person in my early 20s - there is definitely not a huge club scene, from what I hear.
I don’t eat octopus for ethical reasons, but we’ll check out Cortez.
I do love Himalayan Nepali - very good spot. We have not tried Chengdu 7 so will drive over at some point to try it. Thanks for the recommendations!
Maybe I’ve lived here for too long, but there’s nothing incredibly great about here. Of course, depending on where you’re coming from and what you’re looking for, here might be better.
I’ve lived here for 4 years, and have lived on the west coast, all up and down the east coast, in the Midwest, and the Great Plains, and here’s what I’d say is great about this area:
1) cost of living is excellent for the amenities you’ll get.
2) while you do need a car (a negative, somewhat), the traffic and parking here are not nearly as bad as most of major metro areas in the country.
3) the universities in the area add a lot in terms of the economy and workforce, to be sure, but also make large contributions to culture, sports, and other amenities that matches some larger cities and well-exceeds cities of similar size.
4) everything is basically 20 minutes away here.
5) 2 hours to the beach, 2 hours to the mountains, 2 hours to Charlotte.
6) RDU is an excellent little airport, though there are fewer direct flight options.
7) the home supply here is competitive but there are a lot of different kinds of options.
8) there’s a diversity in food, cultures, and people that rival much larger cities.
I could go in but I have found that this region is unique amongst the 7 places I’ve called home during my lifetime. And I’m staying here for good.
All the growth - everything feels and looks so new!
