You're right in thinking that a lot of their responsibilities collide and there are probably many more similarities than differences. In simple words, a marketing coordinator is focused on implementing and coordinating tasks, while a marketing manager is responsible for strategic planning, team leadership, and overall marketing success.
Typically a coordinator is less experienced then a manager and I have found that in this market employers are justifying their pay rate by title while expecting "manager" level experience. It's wretched.
Have moved up from the coordinator role. KPIs, leadership, and analytics biggest difference.
25 years experience and a degree and TWICE I ran the marketing department, helped with the sales staff and their responsibilities, migrating and training on CRM, fixing the website for legal compliance, find fraud from a vendor, be an expert on SEO and SEM, and get the title "Marketing Specialist" <- allowing for salaries in the $60-70k range.
and get laid off because of "ROI" -- excuse me? WTAF?
I have the same issue in the events avenue. Finding that being considered a "senior" in this field is throwing us to the curb.
