Algorithm understanding, no contest. at the end of the day everyone wants to know what's moving the needle.
That said, I work on brand and our social agency is a perfect example of what happens when none of the three exist. They're not thinking strategically, they don't know our audience, AND they're ignoring the algorithm. just making content they like and hoping it sticks.
It's frustrating because you actually need all three working together. But if i had to pick one to anchor everything? Start with the algorithm. It tells you the rules of the game.
Any particular resources you suggest for learning and understanding algorithms?
I think it depends on the type of marketing they are doing. For example, I mostly focus on social media and email campaigns. So understanding not only the algorithm, but the social aspects of what gets people to engage with content these days is really important for my job. Way more than other very important things that my colleagues need to focus on.
Strategic thinking helps you plan how to reach them, and knowing algorithms ensures your message actually gets seen—but audience insight drives all of it
This just encompasses strategic thinking all around.
I feel like strategic thinking supersedes the others mentioned
All of these? If I had to pick just one, I guess it'd be strategic thinking. But if you don't understand your audience or the platforms you utilize, that alone is not going to get you very far.

All good thoughts. Appreciate the responses. At the heart of the question which I wasn’t sure how to frame is if some of the art in the art/science balance is declining in favor of deep expertise in a singular area or discipline. That’s not to imply that understanding algos and audience is not strategic. They are but are also tools strategically applied.
