Agree with the job market pointers, however mine is more of a personal shift. Layoffs create a lot of survivors who learn how to move on to other jobs, and they are fully capable of doing so despite bad situations. I was laid off in October and truly felt the biggest weight off my shoulders when I found out. I was already being overworked and feeling stressed and burnt out right before it happened, so I was pretty happy to be let go with a generous severance package. I spent most of the time decompressing, reading, and catching up on my TV shows. Now I'm truly refreshed going into my new role with way higher pay and more flexibility.
Definitely feels better than when I was laid off in spring 2023. It was CRICKETS then and I only managed a few initial conversations with recruiters; it felt like companies were testing the pipeline
I'd be open to the idea that this current lousy job market may eventually lead to a better business landscape in the future. But even if that's the case, and I'm not really sure it is, it doesn't do anyone much good in the here and now. The idea that companies are more deliberate and aren't adding and shedding employees in a constant churn may be good in the macro sense. But it's cold comfort for job seekers today.
I agree. But I don't think they're JUST being more deliberate about hiring...I think we're seeing a macro decline in the job market. It came on slowly and then all at once. I'll be curious to see the next jobs report which is usually 1 month behind.
I think we (US) didn't see it coming because we genuinely forgot what it's like to have problematic unemployment. I believe it's been held to like 3-4% for a decade. Anyone else remember the 2010ish job market? I graduated college around then and I remember none of us recent grads could get decent jobs for years in most sectors.
My experience has been that the past 2 years have felt slightly more challenging (sometimes hundreds of applicants per job opening), and in the last few months it feels like we dropped off a cliff. I'm definitely rooting for silver linings or a turnaround. But I'm not seeing many great open opportunities out there. I'm curious what others are seeing....
