I know how you feel exactly. I am layed off too. A few things to do
1. Disassociate with old job things. It will only make you more angry and sad. Stop looking at old emails, your documents etc. Move on.
2. Create a good resume. don't worry about perfection. Just get something decent going. You can adjust it later.
3. Apply for jobs like nuts. I applied to maybe 40 or 50 jobs everyday. Anything that had something to do with my skillset, I applied
4. Take care of your health. V v important. If you won't, no one will. Your old company is not going to take care of your health expenses so you do it.
5. Breathe deep 6-10 times a day.
6. Watch funny things to keep you smiling. You HAVE TO DO IT. Otherwise the sad emotions will spiral you down. Do not watch sad movies or songs. Please please please.
7. Going to point 3 again. Apply everywhere. LinkedIn. Glassdoor, dice, ziprecruiter, indeed, monster, local job sites, company websites directly. Get crazy busy with applying.
8. Put a goal to get 5 interviews in next 2 weeks. You have to.
9. Prepare hard. Take notes.
10. Pray hard too. This is the time to fix your spirituality as well.
There is not a single thing mentioned above that I have not done. I finally got several offers. As we speak I am looking into which one should I pick. It will happen for you my friend. The old company will regret with tears of losing you. Make them feel regretful by getting yourself in a better position. Don't put yourself down. Kick their buttz.
I joined this board because I've been laid off before as well. Back in 2017 I was laid off and without employment for 6 months.
I won't lie, it was DEPRESSING.
The reason is, is that we as a society associate everything we are sometimes to our "jobs" and that becomes our identities sometimes, insomuch, we sadly lose who we really are. We had humans are genetically created to be hunter/gatherers so we may unequivocally equate the working aspect to one of these biological needs.
I got depressed. I questioned myself. I questioned my worth.
Looking back, it took me time to find myself again.
My advice. Let yourself feel these emotions. Take a couple days to recuperate. Let yourself feel down. It's ok to be sad about it or mad. Relax. Go easy on yourself.
Realize that sometimes these situations (actually MOST of the time) they are out of our control.
With that in mind, know that you WILL find employment again. It could be in a few weeks or a few months. It might not be doing exactly what you were, but there is a company out there that needs you and your talents and is awaiting your arrival.
Good luck. 👍
Everyday all day, hype yourself up. Remind yourself. Take your thoughts captive and discipline them toward good things. Lay the groundwork to be ready for the next opportunity.
I experienced the same situation back in 2019 when COVID-19 started. At that time, I was working on a STEM OPT work authorization and my PERM has just got approved. When I got laid off, my green card process was voided and time was ticking up for me to get a new job in less than 3 months, otherwise I would have had to leave the US.
It was a stressful moment and the worst thing is, companies didn't want to interview me because of my work authorization status. My American dream was fading away.
However, I didn't give up, I applied for any job out there that had a little relation with my profile and likely, I got one that was paying more than my previous job.
Long story short, have hope, keep applying for openings, never give up and keep learning to get better at what you do.
Thanks for all your kind words!! I dont know why, today I felt more lost as it marks four weeks of unemployment and not able to get a single interview call.
But you guys cheered me up!! Thank you so much
Hey it's not easy, I experienced the same from Wayfair. I think the best thing to do is allow yourself to feel all the mixed emotions but channel them into action once you feel ready.
I'd saw reach out to your network they will help you the most.
Short answer: it’s ok not to be ok.
The feelings will ebb and flow. It was definitely a surprise for me. My best recommendation is to give yourself a day and then start reaching out to your networks—let them know what happened. You’ll be surprised to find that there may be a few folks you know that went through this, too.
Update your resume. Start looking at jobs on LinkedIn in companies that you may have a connection working in, ask them if they’d be willing to refer you internally.
If you still have health coverage as part of your separation package, use it to take some counseling sessions. It won't immediately solve this problem, but it will be a start.
I just had a mental breakdown this morning. I feel so lost and unseen from all the hard work and heart I put into my projects. I keep thinking am I not enough? What could I have done more? My manager was so short and kept minimal with the details besides that the business no longer needed my role.
I feel disposable. And it doesn’t help that I’m a hormonal female right now trying so hard to be happy in front of everyone so they won’t have to feel pity or sorrow for me.
I feel out of control. And I just need to find some sort of closure or peace with all of this.
