Take them out back and show them who is boss 😂
I hear some of this in my firm. I’m a fan of mandatory retirement ages (60 seems right in consulting), but absent a change of policy, I’m not going anywhere.
So what is someone over 60, who's kept their skills current, supposed to do if they plan to work into their 70s? Flip burgers?
Even if they are not happy, stop being the victim and prove yourself in the workforce. No one owes you anything, after every generation does something unique to establish their value in the workplace - what’s theirs? Certainly not blaming the boomers!
A lot of us are still in the workforce because we are still passionate about our jobs, have the energy and years of experience that benefits others. I have no problem working for someone younger than me, we need to allow our senior hires to maximize their contributions and not cast them aside. Find a way to include them in your professional and personal interactions! If that means having to take a pay cut to continue in the workplace we need to deal with it. Alternatives are to start your own business, but the culture of ageism needs to stop although I don’t see that happening in America.
Why is there such a focus on age? If we could concentrate on capability and ability to make an impact on the job, age would not be an issue. Young and older people can compete on an equal footing - we need to stop thinking that younger people are entitled to the jobs out there and the older ones need to step aside because they have done their time. Everyone is free to decide how long they want to keep working and the hiring manager decides the fit for the job based on capability and impact potential
Trying to picture how someone would accost you to get out of the workforce.
Younger workers are less expensive and, at a certain point, that's a consideration for hiring managers. Also, the bigger the age difference, the more difficult socializing can be. So, if that's an important part of the job, it does have impact.
