Why do people have no problem with paying a hospital bill that's 1200. But people complain when their mechanic says they owe 1200 dollars for fixing a problem with their check engine light. I don't understand.

Human Life vs metal, rubber and plastic?, maybe?

like

I think people complain way more about the cost of medical care than they do about the cost of car repairs.

like

I'll echo this.

The cost of Healthcare is arguably one of the top 5 most talked about issues during election cycles. People care about it immensely.

like

Because $1200 to fix a check engine light is usually BS. $1200 for a medical bill is usually a steal in the US.

Hospital services are naturally expensive

A check engine light shouldn’t be more than $100 even at a stealership

likefunny

Not disagreeing, but I’d be interested to know by what principle a service is “naturally”expensive.

Just because your car is more important than your life does not mean that is the case with everyone 😲

I can purchase an extended warranty for my car, but I can’t do it for my health.

Next question.

like

It’s called whole life insurance, and like an extended warranty, they aren’t typically good deals…

It is not you. It's tangibility. People spend 1200 at a hospital get almost instantaneous results and they feel better. There's way more bad mechanics than bad doctors. They have no way of knowing good mechanics to trust. With mechanics they spend 1200 with you to fix the check engine and don't know if it is going to be next hour, next day, next week when that light is going to be on again. In some instances you are asking them to spend more money on the car than they would at their doctors.

I don't want to pay $1200 to anyone unexpectedly

like

What's with you and insurance/car repair rhetorical questions, OP? Lol

like

A bettered question is why do people not mind spending 1200 to fix their side by side, motorcycle, boat, etc. but they do mind when it’s the vehicle that gets them to work and back. Because it’s not fun. I get that, but you cannot afford the fun if you can’t get to work.

Working on a divorce where the father is claiming that he is unemployed because of the previous administration’s actions with DACA (he was brought to the States as a child). I know that the memo rescinding DACA was ultimately vacated—but OC is unsure whether this would count as voluntary unemployment for child support purposes. I believe it does as the application period to renew DACA benefits was reopened in 2020. Thoughts?

I've been a government attorney for nearly three years now and have worked in the same office/division since I passed the bar. I've yet to receive a promotion other than two cost of living increases (in sum, a pay increase of 6k over 3 years). I know this is meager, but I'm mostly ok with it, I just want to see some recognition. On the other hand, it's hard for me to imagine negotiating because (given my inexperience), I don't feel I'd be able to do better anywhere else. Any advice?
