I've been a government attorney for nearly three years now and have worked in the same office/division since I passed the bar. I've yet to receive a promotion other than two cost of living increases (in sum, a pay increase of 6k over 3 years). I know this is meager, but I'm mostly ok with it, I just want to see some recognition. On the other hand, it's hard for me to imagine negotiating because (given my inexperience), I don't feel I'd be able to do better anywhere else. Any advice?

Jump to another government position with another agency or office. I'm assuming you're in a state or city level office. Maybe there's a more lucrative position in a bigger city. Or perhaps a federal government position.

🛳 Jump ship! Best time to do it tbh with the current job market. It’s easier said than done but it wouldn’t hurt to throw out some feelers. You can always do better.

I'll add that the pandemic really threw a wrench into my development, and I feel other than reviewing documents, sending out subpoenas, and taking an occasional deposition, I haven't done/learned much, which adds to my lack of confidence. Perhaps this is typical for a new(ish) attorney, but I'm not sure. In other words, I'm trying to imagine how I'd justify something like a 10% raise. On the other hand, I have peers who were hired at the same time as me who make more and aren't sure how they've earned it either; they think it's just because it's what the market demands (but apparently not in my case). There are others who have a few more years experience than I who earn 20% more and seem to have gotten there from private practice experience, leading me to wonder, do I have to jump between jobs to see improvement? I know many people will say yes but uprooting my development feels unwise.

I've asked for brutal honesty from my superiors because if there's something I'm NOT doing, I'd like to know so I can improve, but so far, nothing. I've attempted to step up, work longer hours, push my docket more aggressively, to no (apparent) avail. Given that this is public sector, I understand my superiors only control so much.

I don't want to leave this position because A) I like what I do, B) I like the work life balance C) I'm in it for the student loan forgiveness and D) I'm not sure I'd do significantly better if I went elsewhere, but I also don't want to stagnate (at the beginning of my career no less).

With the market seeming so bullish/pro-worker, I feel I am being left behind, and similarly, if and when I receive a promotion (which I've heard may be coming in the next three to six months), rather than being grateful, I'll feign happiness and think 'about time, better late than never.'

Any thoughts around how to use M&A tax skills for the better good? I’m a CPA and originally got into this for a stable / interesting job, but in the long-term I’d like to do something that either influences drafting of tax legislation or helps the public (however naive that may sound). Perhaps I’ve gotten too introspective during the pandemic. Don’t really want to go back for a JD and aside from keeping a roof over my head I’m not very motivated by money. Anyone else have similar ideas?

I often fail at some interviews badly.
Not sure till when I'll be able to carry forward by this and the hard wlb at FAANG companies is giving me a fear.

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. We have a wide variety of needs but don’t necessarily need to have this future person have all these skills. For example we need someone with great copywriting skills and also need someone who is great at digital marketing. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.
