It’s common practice and no benefit to you to provide that information. Just respond back that the job description range is in line with what you are seeking.
Even third party recruiters technically can’t ask that directly. I would respond with what salary you are looking for, not what you are currently making.
Thought this was now illegal to ask this in about 22-23 states. Look up whether this is legal in your state. Doesn’t benefit you to disclose
It is illegal to be asking that in a lot of states. But even if you live where it's not prohibited, it's not a good idea to disclose it. There's no advantage for you in them knowing that, there's only an advantage for them.
Don’t tell them how much you are making. Just say you are interested in pursuing opportunities that pay around $X.
Probably an anchor for the roles they bring to you. If the range for a job is say $100-130k and you’re presently making $130, makes no sense to tease your interest.
Only 3rd party recruiters “should” be asking that. No internal recruiter cares, or should care
Yes they are mostly third party recruiters
Say you can’t disclose.
Turn it around and ask what their budget is for the role they are recruiting for.
I’ve never had a recruiter ask me that
