Working remotely is a win, but at times I feel like comes with unreasonable expectations to stay 100.% on at all times. If I don’t respond in 5 minutes it’s a big deal. I’m expected to produce excellent work, not multitask during meetings and show my camera, read up on chats, keep up with emails as they come in. It’s just a lot to do all at once, all the time. Is this what other remote people experience? And how does this translate to people who are in office?

Well if you’re in the office you have to do all that while being in the office haha.

I went into the office once and I couldn’t get any work done it was a ton of socialization. Probably because it was also holiday party time too but still. Was hard to get anything done

I'm working remotely half the time and no one really cares what I'm doing at any specific moment. As long as I hit the deadlines and the work is good no one questions when I did it. If I had to be micromanaged while working remotely I'd just as soon be in the office full time.

You think being in office is better than being micromanaged remotely?

Not really. I'm expected to be responsive between 9-5, yeah, but I'm not getting harassed if it takes me an hour or two to respond to an email. All my boss cares about is that my work gets done on time and gets done well. So long as I do that, she pretty much leaves me be.

I have 5 managers each on different accounts 🥲 do you work in-house?

It is kind of a big deal if you’re not available during working hours and you aren’t transparent about why. Part of the remote set up is based on trust.
If you need to leave your desk, set your status to away. If you need focus time, put that in your status. Then it’s clear what time you will be back and be able to reply. Transparency- It’s that easy. If you start updating your managers regularly so they don’t have to come chasing you, you may find they learn they can leave you alone and trust you’re actually working. It’s just about optics!

I think this is a great point. It is based on trust. Yes I am very transparent. There is still unreasonable expectation to complete things excellently while also being fully present in meetings AND responding to people immediate
