I only do my job, but will go above and beyond when it comes to helping answer questions that aren’t even related to my area. Once answered, I direct them to the process owner for any further questions or concerns.
I can see doing a bit more than the expected minimum, in the sense that it keeps things running smoothly. But the dynamic in the article, where you're putting in untold hours for no reward, is too much. I can understand someone putting some real limits on their commitment to the job.
I respect this position so much if I'm being honest. Why should we give more than what we were hired to do? A life that is completely dedicated to work is no life that I want to live. I have a family, friends, hobbies. I work so that I can enjoy those things, not the other way around
I do what is required to help my org. I know the value I bring and stick to my strengths. I no longer volunteer to help everyone with everything or work all hours.
