40 years ago when I was 17. I got a larceny charge (shoplifting). I applied for a job...they offered . Contingent on a background check! They called me today and rescinded the offer. I promise that was the first and last thing I ever did So stupid mistakes follow you for the rest of your life!

I'm sorry, that stinks. Are you still near where it happened and can try and can look into getting expunged?

Depending on the type of business, anything on there can be an issue regardless of age and nothing since. Any company that is finance related is a big one. Is it fair? Not necessarily, but that's how it is. Which is why I brought up the suggestion. I would not focus on why it's not fair, and focus on what you can do to change it or move past it.

I agree you should look into getting it expunged, but in the meantime…did you try being upfront with them when they mentioned the background check? Depending on the industry, they might be willing to overlook it if you explain before it comes up. Some background checks can be light on details, meaning the information they receive is general and wouldn’t have details (eg, “you have a larceny charge on your record” vs “you have a larceny charge from 40 years ago when you were a minor”.)

I honestly forgot about it!!!! I haven't thought about it in years. And she told me it was from 1985 so she knew!

Best to tell them up front. They would probably want to hear it from you before doing the background search…

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Judge didn’t care, as soon as she heard him say we hadn’t conferred she denied the motion. Not asking a question, just needed to vent.

Hi, this is a bit early but thought y’all might have some good insight. I’m exiting my current startup & have two offers on the table 1. A successful small startup in NYC doing PE/niche executive recruiting and 2. a fairly reputable PE consulting group in Austin. I’m going through the recruitment process at McKinsey for a middle/back office role (capabilities for a really cool space) but by the time I hear back, one of my offers won’t be on the table. Any advice on what’s best for MBA apps?
