It’s great that you want to handle this thoughtfully. Generally, it’s best to check your company’s gift policy first, a lot of organizations have clear guidelines about what’s acceptable. If the policies are vague, I usually lean toward politely thanking the employee but not accepting gifts that might be seen as influencing decisions or creating favoritism. Sometimes acknowledging the gesture with a note or verbal thanks without keeping the gift helps maintain professionalism while still showing appreciation.
That was really sweet of them. I would probably give it back though. Even if it's something homemade or sentimental, it could still be perceived as garnering favor, or they could come back to you and expect some sort of reciprocity in the future. It's not worth putting yourself in that position.

What was the gift? I would probably give it back. If anything, I'd expect to receive a gift as a new hire! haha
