I don’t think a gap should disqualify us, but sadly, I do think some hiring managers still see it that way. With so many people being laid off the past few years, it should be a no-brainer why there's a gap, right? I try to be honest without overexplaining. Just a quick sentence in the cover letter, then focus on what I can do.
Not really sure what the alternative would be? I don’t go out of my way to bring it up, but definitely have an answer prepared. Find a way to talk about it positively even though it’s usually anything but when you have a gap. That is just kind of how it goes right now in the world.
Be honest about the gap, but frame it strategically! Own the year off. Mention it but then focus on what you did with that time: learning, caregiving, staying sharp, etc. Employers respect growth, even through struggle.
Ugh I am so sorry to hear that. I have several friends who are in the same boat and I know the job market is very tough. I always tell them what the gaps on my resume are if they ask. But i have noticed that sometimes they don't even ask.
