My personal recommendation is to first join the team and learn your role as well as the roles of your direct reports. Conduct weekly 1:1, listen actively, and encourage collaboration. The goal is to inspire them to see themselves as part of the big picture, which can be a challenge in healthcare (my field).
I always take these steps before recommending any changes, no matter how badly they're needed. It's crucial to let the team be part of the solution, which ensures they feel heard and creates transparency in the process. I tell my team that I will always include them in decisions that affect them, even when we don't have the final say, it's important that their voices are heard.
I’ve never truly respected a leader who implemented huge changes without first taking the time to understand what we do and why we do it.
Learning about generational differences has helped me to better manage younger direct reports. I've attended some training on how to work and communicate across generations. While I think you have to be careful not to over-generalize the negative stereotypes, it is helpful to be able to identify the differences and have strategies to apply.
