Anyone else find yourself tipping more to try and escape the “Asians are cheap” stereotype?

Tbh my Asian friends and my parents always scold me when I tip even 15% at restaurants. They're like, "The restaurant owner should be grateful we even came to buy their food! If you liked it then give them maybe $1-2."

like

I don’t tip more to avoid the stereotype. I tip more when it’s good service. I once tipped 5% because the waiter never came by after he brought out my food and he was sitting on the other table playing on his phone the whole time. I had to call other waiter to bring out my check. It’s like he forgot that he’s still working lol

OP I agree with your sentiment. For business travel meals I tip exactly 20% or just under 20%. Whenever I’m paying out of my own pocket, I typically go 18% to 22%, never less than 15% and never more than 30%, depending on service quality and whether it’s a high cost of living city. I’m Chinese so I tend to pay more on the off chance I get a server (in a non-Chinese restaurant) who speaks Chinese. I’ll contribute more if it’s a mom and pop shop and err on the side of 15% if it’s an expensive steakhouse/seafood/sushi place. When I first came from China, I tipped 10% to 15% because I was in undergrad racking up credit card debt. Now that I’m working I feel like helping others.

🙋🏻‍♀️ but only if the service was good. If not, I definitely don’t because I don’t want to associate Asians/myself with “suckers"

like

That is definitely me... even got into a fight with my mom one time because she kept commenting on how there’s no need to be nicer than the minimum requirement to perfect strangers, and I alone can’t reverse the stereotypes about Asians... but my thought was, it starts with me. When I see some of my Asian friends give crappy tips (esp. at non-Asian restaurants) I definitely cringe on the inside. If someone has lived and worked in the states for a number of years there’s not really a good excuse for not at least giving an average tip these days, which is like 18-20% now.

like

Define more. More than20%? But personally, definitely not. I invest in myself first. Also depends on the experience and # of ppl. If a meal for 2 cost $25, I tip $5-7. If it cost 40, I still tip the about same. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I normally tip unless they include service charge in my bill.
