Work laptop: Have IT replace it.
Personal laptop: Buy a new one.

OP has us arguing with each other and won’t let us know the fate of this laptop. 🙄

Firm laptop: ask for new one overnight. Personal: walk/drive to a repair shop and ask for quote. If you’re looking for practical advice on how to get the humidity out before doing that, leave it in a box full of uncooked rice for about 12 hours. If it doesn’t work after that, you’ll need to repair or replace.

Do make sure to cover all ports before doing this. Getting rice stuck in a USB port is not fun

Rain? Are you sure you’re qualified to own a laptop?

I was using my firm-issued backpack so bring it up with them

like

Get a neoprene sleeve for the laptop to house it in, inside whatever bag or backpack you use.

For now, let it dry out completely before turning it on or you risk frying it. Notify IT and see if a replacement is possible overnight or pick up a loaner laptop at your office tomorrow.

Soaking in a bag of rice works for phones, but with a laptop some of the holes are bigger than rice so I wouldn’t recommend that here.

I spilled a water bottle on my MacBook Air screen in law school and after drying it out the screen magically reappeared.

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

General corporate in NY looking to lateral into tech transactions at one of the EC/VC firms. I’ve heard that I may get a class cut if I make the move but I’m ok with that. My worry is that EC/VC firms are crazy busy work differently from general corp, I also won’t have control over my hours, and potentially worse based on how billing differs (block billing on a few clients vs having to work with 15 or more startups). Is the same true for tech trans or IP group?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

I’m a 4th year and I’ve never billed contemporaneously for even a one full week. I guess I’d just rather have one day of torture recording all my hours at the end of the month than that extra little torture daily. I’m wondering how common or rare this is in BigLaw. Thoughts?
