Does anyone else feel that calling some minority SA hires “diversity fellows” and the like is somewhat of a dog whistle? If top firms were really committed to DEI, wouldn’t they just hire more unrepresented SAs rather than making them advertise that they were hired as a part of some woke initiative?

I am frustrated as a Gay Woman who has given her all for 30+ years grinding to be the best. I have been in closet, out of closet, in-between and am tired of it. I want to be VALUED as a human being. I have gone from Rock Star to problem when people "found out". I have trained and promoted hundreds of people and been passed over for promotions because of not being a man. I have trained men with less experience, worse results only for them to move forward. If Diversity is important...prove it!

I’m a first year that’s inching toward second year. Partners in my group say “sometimes getting thrown into the deep end is the best way to learn.” However, I feel so lost. I feel like saying the above is just an excuse for not wanting to take the time to actually teach new associates.

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.

I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

Corporate associates — do you feel it’s harder to meet hours vs your litigation counterparts? Billing in increments of 0.10 vs driving to the courthouse that can be billed in large chunks, as an example (pre-covid obvi)

As a mid-senior level associate in litigation/investigations/arbitration, do you feel like what you’re currently doing is actually holding you back in terms of professional/personal development? Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

I haven’t done caselaw research since 1L and this isn’t even my practice… wtf do I do (I am fully utilized in my normal work and have a few deals closing soon…)
