I am so sorry you are struggling. Do you have flexibility to try a more child-led approach? Can you use their interests and strengths to create learning opportunities that are meaningful to them? When I have a tough group, I try to take a step back and set up choices for the kids then observe them and listen to them. I use the state standards to look for the specific skills that need to be addressed, but their interest areas to plan the curriculum. For example, if I have a group that loves animals, I plan deep learning experiences about animals and use the math, science, reading, and writing that relates to their interests and meets the standards.
Also, can you offer some kind of fun “break” day? Maybe the students are as stressed as you are. Remember that behavior is communication. November 6th is outdoor classroom day. Check out outdoorclassroomday.com
Work toward the day of fun to motivate the kids with realistic behavior expectations or goals.
Another thing to try is using ClassDojo to award points to kids for good behavior, share photos and communicate with families. I was hesitant to try this at first, but it has been a game changer. The parents love that ClassDojo is an easy to use app that offers notifications and a quick and easy way to communicate with teachers. I have not used the point system in it yet, but my colleagues love it.
So glad to hear about “outdoor classroom day” b/c I had to move my planned 7 & 8 bonfire for last Thursday - indoors. I prepared a simple challenge card and turned it into a raffle ticket for my indoor carnival. Gave away 20 pumpkins, some were 99 cent pumpkins and others a friend donated after their business event. The 8th grade (my first 2 classes of the day) can’t keep their eyes open and the 2 - 7th grade classes are vying for 1st place in disruptive behavior while I am instructing them:(
I am desperately trying to win them over. I also provide multiple PBIS rewards for appropriate behavior. I’m exhausted , keep fighting the good fight my teacher friends. Here we are taking a break from the Cake Walk game and doing the cha cha:)
