I’m in Tokyo right now traveling for the next year and working remotely. It’s not as easy as working by the woodstove in the kitchen, but it has its benefits. Right now in the US the best places to be are in the south and the southwest just from a weather standpoint. Charlotte, Charleston, New Orleans, Key West. I was recently in truth or consequences New Mexico and they have some really cool little funky art galleries & Hot Springs. Tucson is very cool as is Phoenix. I just spent 10 days in Mexico City as well and that was an excellent place to be a digital nomad. Lots of tacos.
Regarding the conundrum of working while on a tourist visa: I’m actually not working with any local companies when I do what I do. One client i did work for is a media organization back in my hometown. And the other client I worked for in Japan was an international paleontology nonprofit. I didn’t come to Japan to work, I came to Japan to see the country and I just happened to do a little work while I was there. I wasn’t extracting a penny from the local economy or taking a job away from anyone in Japan. So I don’t think a work visa applies to me. Interestingly, I did not play my guitar on the street in Japan as I did in São Paulo, Brazil and Ecuador. Because that would have required a work visa based on my research. It’s funny that I would need a work visa to earn 1200 yen worth of change. But I don’t think I need a work visa to do a project worth thousands of dollars. Go figure.
I did a 6 month road trip from east coast to west coast covering 5-7 national parks. Stay put in Airbnb during weekdays and drive over the weekends and camp! ⛺️
