I started prepping my kids when they were in kindergarten.

My kids are not in HS yet so I need some clarity. Is this in regards to the college admissions process and not some pay-to-play scheme like the Aunt Becky USC situation?
My friend is a HS guidance counselor and his job is primarily focused on getting students to the best college for them. Is this different than what’s available through the school itself?

That said, what I have discovered through this is that getting into top colleges, especially Ivy League and similar, is an insane process nowadays. I wouldn’t make it. If you have those kind of aspirations for your kids, you may benefit from this also.
Well, sure - what’s your question? Are you looking for specific names? Or asking whether it was worth it? Or…?
That’s on you, buddy. If you want names of counselors, be more specific. If you’re asking about the process, that’s entirely different.
Are there any top notch / known counselors who are really good for guiding through Ivy League admissions?
I went through this whole process a few years ago. Net - hired a well respected former Ivy League admissions officer believing she would be able to give us an “unfair advantage”. In the end, it was a waste of time & $. To boot, the types of guidance she provided (essay topics, writing style, schools to target EA, ED, regular process — all based on my kid’s home town, grades, desired major, etc) are easily reproduced by AI.

My son’s ACT went from 27 to 32! The difference probably gets him into some schools (highly selective publics) he really wanted but may not have made it into.

What can I say P2. Worked for us.
The best advice I received can be boiled down to:
- Kids want to go to one of the coasts cuz that’s cool/fun
- That’s where education and living is most expensive
- Best bang for buck is sandwiched between the coasts, but not sexy to your kids
- Research Universities are the worst at prepping kids for the real world
- Editorial/personal opinion: College is increasingly a bad investment, unless you are smart about it (don’t pay for brand, don’t pay for location, pick outcome over prestige)
